AUSTRALIA is pursuing "half a strategy in Afghanistan", with one of the nation's most respected army commanders warning there is confusion over its mission and what it wants to achieve in the decade-long war.

Peter Leahy, who served as chief of army from 2002 to 2008, told The Australian yesterday that time was running out to get the strategy right. "The Australian government has traded off the bravery, resolve and professionalism of its soldiers for too long," he said. "The nation-building task at hand is not a job for soldiers alone, but it seems that only soldiers are available to do the job."

AN SAS corporal has become the latest soldier to be cited for the nation's highest military honour, the Victoria Cross for Australia, defence sources have confirmed.

The soldier, from Western Australia and in his early 30s, is the second member of the elite Perth-based Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) to receive the award in two years.

Senior defence sources confirmed the battle after which the soldier was recommended for the VC occurred last October in the Sha Wali Kot region of northern Kandahar.

It's understood the action involved other Australian special forces soldiers from the Commando Regiment.

AN Australian special forces soldier has died in Afghanistan, taking the number of Australian soldiers to have died in Afghanistan to 18.

Acting Defence Force chief Lieutenant General David Hurley named the soldier as Trooper Jason Brown, 29, a member of the Perth-based Special Air Service Regiment.

Lieutenant General Hurley on Saturday said Trooper Brown was shot overnight while assisting in a "disruption operation" in northern Kandahar.

Several insurgents engaged the coalition troops using small arms, and Trooper Brown suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

He received immediate first aid and was evacuated by helicopter to Kandahar, but died.

Lieutenant General Hurley expressed "deep regret" at the death.
