AN Australian soldier has been killed and another seriously wounded by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan last night.

The member of the First Mentoring Task Force was killed just before midnight (AEST) last night, chief of the Defence Force air chief marshal Angus Houston said today.

The soldier was a 23-year-old from NSW who was based in Brisbane.

A second Australian soldier was wounded and he remains in a "satisfactory condition''.
