Update on the Ray Simpson, VC, DCM Biography Project

by Mick Malone and Pete Lutley

This update will hopefully keep all of you who have contributed to this book up to date on what we’ve achieved so far whether you are family, friends, fellow soldiers or other interested parties.

This biography project follows "Simmo" the man over his 52 years of life including his younger days in Dalmar  Children's Home in Sydney during the depression years, his stellar career in the Army from 1944 and to his latter days working in the Australian Embassy in Japan. Overall he was on Active Service for nearly 9 years (108 months). His military career had many stops and starts and a few down sides especially in the early days of his WW11 service.

I am looking for the following people;

Jimmy Fay No. 1202416 Joined the army around the 13 January 1969 and went into 23 Platoon D Coy 1RTB at Kapooka went on to serve with 8RAR and was WIA on the 28 February 1970.

Anthony  Marshall 219147  joined around the same time in the same unit and was also WIA on the 28th February 1970 while serving with 8RAR.

If you know these guys or their family contact me and I will pass on their details to the group of people from the same unit they went into when they joined the army in 1969

David Christie OAM

23 Platoon D Coy 1RTB 1969

4RAR 1969 – 1972

Vietnam 1971

The paragraph below was written by Klaus ‘Tank’ Scheuernmann President 8 RAR Association

Both these guys served in 1 Pl A Coy and were wounded in the mine incident on 28 Feb 70 in Long Hai Hills.  Jim Fay regimental number is 1202416.  Both these guys are on our looking for list and we have circulated their names and others in our newsletter without luck.  The sad truth is that the majority of the guys wounded in the mine blast had only marched into the platoon a couple of days prior to the incident, so they really hadn’t had a chance to bond with the Platoon.

1970 Marshall 219147  joined around the same time in the same unit and was also WIA on the 28th February 1970 while serving with 8RAR.

Well Done Those Men

Australia's National Year of Reading 2012 starts here, with the opportunity for everyone to vote for the book that they think should represent their state or territory as one of the eight on our national recommended reading list for 2012 – and we're delighted to announce that we're partnering with the ABC and the First Tuesday Book Club for this one.

See at http://www.love2read.org.au/

Barry Heard’s book has been selected in the state and territory shortlists chosen by independent panels of readers for the The National Year of Reading.

Voting commences 1 November 2011, online at www.abc.net.au/yearofreading and in participating libraries and bookshops. The closing date is 6 January 2012.

Thanks Barry.
